Health and Safety advisories from MRA

Manitoba Ringette Policy on Handshaking:

In order to reduce the possible transmission of any viruses, the traditional handshake at the completion of a game will entail leaving on the gloves and “bumping” the opponent’s glove.

Ringette Canada H1N1 Virus Best Practices

Upon consultation with experts in epidemiology it has become clear that Ringette’s reaction to H1N1 is best comprised entirely of the same hygiene best practices that we have always encouraged. These practices include:
- Frequent and thorough hand washing;
- Prohibiting the sharing of water bottles, and ensuring this by clearly marking every water bottle with the athlete/coach/officials’ name;
- Strongly advising participants to stay home when they are sick; and
- Advising all participants to cough or sneeze into the crook of the elbow rather than into their hands.

As is noted above, all of these measures are good practice at any time and in any situation and should be continued regardless of the progress of this or any other virus.
For stakeholders looking for more information, I refer you to the key federal government website for this area:

www.fightflu.ca

The site includes advice on preventing the spread of the flu as well as links to provincial public health websites. These websites will be providing up-to-date information about the flu and about government regulations or reactions pertaining to its spread. Simply put, there is no better source of information about the flu than this group of websites.
Thank you to all for your attention to this important matter. Should any new information become available or other actions become required we will continue to communicate to our ringette community as quickly as possible.
